Coffee is
a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which
are the seeds of berries from the Coffee plant. Coffee is native to tropical
Africa (specifically having its origin
in Ethiopia and Sudan) and Madagascar,
the Comoros, Mauritius, and Reunion in the Indian Ocean. The
plant was exported from Africa to countries around the world and coffee plants
are now cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial
regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. The
two most commonly grown are the Arabica, and the Robusta.
Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and
dried. Dried coffee seeds (referred to as beans) are roasted to
varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. Roasted beans are ground
and brewed with near-boiling water to produce coffee as a beverage.
Coffee is slightly acidic and can have
a stimulating effect on humans because of its caffeine content. Coffee is one of the most popular drinks
in the world. It can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways (e.g. espresso, French
press, cafe latte, etc.). It is usually served hot, although iced
coffee is also served.
Clinical studies indicate that moderate coffee consumption
is beneficial in healthy adults, with continuing research on whether long-term
consumption inhibits cognitive decline during aging or lowers the
risk of some forms of cancer.
Research has shown that moderate coffee consumption
(3-5 cups daily) may be associated with many positive effects, including:
1) Burning body Fat: Coffee is beneficial in weight
loss, it helps to burn body fat by increasing the body metabolic rate. caffeine
is found in almost every commercial fat burning supplement?
Caffeine is one of the very few natural substances
that have actually been proven to aid fat burning. Several studies show that
caffeine can boost the metabolic rate by 3-11% Other studies show that caffeine can specifically
increase the burning of fat, by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in
lean people.
Research show that caffeine can
increase fat burning in the body and boost the metabolic rate. However, it is
possible that these effects will diminish in long-term coffee drinkers.
2) Coffee contains essential nutrients: Many of the
nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, so it is not
just colored water.
A single cup of coffee contains: Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): 11% of
the RDA, Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): 6% of the RDA, Manganese and Potassium:
3% of the RDA, Magnesium and Niacin (B3): 2% of the RDA.
Although this may look insignificant, however most coffee drinkers
take more than one cup in a day. Hence If you drink 3-4, these amounts add up.
3) Liver disease prevention: Scientist after series
of research, found out that coffee lowers incident of liver cancer by 40%. the
result further suggest that if you take an average of 3 cups a day it increases
your chances to 50%.
4) Improved cognitive function in adults: Research
also shows that coffee drinker have an improved cognitive function than non
drinkers. This happens because Caffeine blocks an inhibitory
neurotransmitter in the brain, which leads to a stimulant effect. This improves
energy levels, mood and various aspects of brain function.
5) Sharper memory: Numerous experiment
show that coffee drinkers have different aspects of improved brain function.
This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and
general cognitive function
6) Increased athletic endurance: Coffee
can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels. This is because it
contains caffeine which is actually the most commonly consumed psychoactive
substance in the world.
After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed
into the bloodstream. From there, it travels into the brain. In the brain,
caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.
When that happens, the amount of other
neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine actually increases, leading
to enhanced firing of neurons.
7) Coffee Fight Depression and Make You Happier: Depression
is a serious mental disorder that causes a significantly reduced quality of
life. In
a Harvard study published in 2011, women who drank coffee had a 20%
lower risk of becoming depressed.
Another
study from Harvard also discovered that people who had 2 to 3 cups a
day of the beverage were 55 percent less likely to commit suicide than
nondrinkers.
Coffee appears to lower the risk of developing
depression and may dramatically reduce the risk of suicide. Coffee
might just be a liquid happy pill.
8) Longevity: A new study adds to growing
evidence that coffee is good for us, finding that consuming four to five cups
daily may reduce the risk of early death - even for those who drink decaf.
9) Coffee and heart health: Researchers at Harvard
School of Public Health, concluded that drinking
coffee in moderation (about 2 cups/ day) protects against heart failure.
Coffee may cause mild increases
in blood pressure, which usually diminish over time. Coffee drinkers do not
have an increased risk of heart disease.
Due to the increasing scientific evidence, coffee has earned a new
– and improved – reputation i.e. that of being the number 1 energy drink in the
world. It helps drinkers to wake up and be on the go instantly which makes it
part of a healthy lifestyle.
